Check Implant

Patients should check their implants regularly for breast good health. Physicians recommend patients follow ups with doctors for the life of the implant. Though generally safe, breast implants are medical devices and they can fail. If detected early enough, replacing a ruptured breast implant, particularly saline-filled breast implants, is similar to replacing a battery in a battery compartment. If detected late, ruptured silicone implants can cause thickening of scar tissue around the implant, which can lead to breast deformity and pain. Delayed replacement or removal of ruptured breast implants can be more complicated.

Implant Failure

Capsular Contracture

Capsular contracture occurs when the scar tissue or capsule that normally forms around the implant tightens and squeezes the implant. Capsular contraction is more common following infection, hematomas or seromas (collection of watery portion of blood). There are four grades of capsular contractor - more and for prevention

Saline Overfilling and Under filling

Overfilling a breast implant is filling the amount saline beyond the recommended manufacturer amount. Under filling a breast implant is filling the amount saline below the manufacturer minimum.

Breast Implant

A breast implant alters the size and shape of the breasts of a person. There are two primary types of breast implants: saline-filled and silicone-gel-filled. Saline implants have a silicone elastomer shell filled with sterile saline liquid.

Silicone Gel Bleed

Silicone can leak out of the implant without an obvious rupture of the shell. A slow silicone leak occurs through an intact shell. This "silicone bleed" is only noticeable when a doctor removes the implant or when the patient undergoes another type of breast surgery. Older generations of silicone implants bleed more often relative to the newer "cohesive" implants. No study definitively shows clinical consequences associated with a silicone gel bleed - more

Poor Results

No surgeon or implant manufacturer can guarantee the success of any surgery. Some patients may be disappointed with the results of their surgery. Results vary: breast asymmetry, displacement, nipple location, breast shape and size, loss of sensitivity or function, wound disruption, and poor healing affect the opinion of the patient after surgery - Consultation
